Food Pyramid Coloring Match-Up
How Much Salt? Fat? Sugar?
Nutrition tables gave participants an opportunity to learn about healthy eating, and challenged kids to use the knowledge in various games. The 'Food Pyramid Coloring Match-Up' activity introduced kids to the USDA's food pyramid nutritional recommendations. This activity was a hands-on experience, encouraging kids to learn the different food groups within the food pyramid. The 'How Much Salt? Fat? Sugar?' was an interactive activity for kids, which showed them how much salt, fat and sugar is in their favorite foods. It then allowed the children to see what the recommended intake of salt, fat and sugar should be. The 'Critter Crunch' activity taught kids a healthy snack they can make themselves.
The fun didn't stop there! Kids who participated in all events were entered into the raffle to win New Balance gift certificates, a Tree-Umph! gift certificate, bikes, scooters, skateboards, kickboxing training sets, archery sets and much more. Also, all children in attendance received a goody bag containing a Frisbee, baton or kite donated by Junior League of Manatee County, drawstring backpacks, and beach balls donated by Rack Room Shoes of University Park, toothbrushes and toothpaste donated by Advanced Dental Care, and coupons donated by Rack Room Shoes of University Park, Advanced Dental Care, Tree Umph!, Bostock's Martial Arts & Fitness, Sweet Tomatoes University Park, Fit2Run and Yogurt Mountain of Bradenton.
|By participating in all of the activities, kids could win a bike, skateboard, scooter or several other raffle prizes!|
In total, $3,800 in food, sporting equipment and giveaways were given out to the community by Junior League of Manatee County.
Why do we host Get Your Fit On?
Florida ranks 35th in overall prevalence with 33.1% of children considered either overweight or obese. The Florida prevalence of overweight and obese children has risen since 2003.¹ By hosting Get Your Fit On!, a FREE fun-filled day of fitness and nutrition, Junior League of Manatee County hopes to help reverse the rise of childhood obesity in Florida.
The Junior Leagues’ Kids in the Kitchen initiative is a response to the alarming statistics that nearly one-third of children and adolescents in the United States are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.²
