Women In Strength Award (WISA)
The Women in Strength Awards Luncheon was started by Kara Bettle, who is the 2008-2009 Junior League President.  Kara was a Board Member at PACE Center for Girls and wanted to create a project that allowed the strong, successful women of our community to serve as examples to the at-risk young ladies of PACE Center for Girls. The luncheon honors women who have overcome significant obstacles to success in their personal or professional lives.  Nominations are accepted from the fall until the end of January each year. The awards luncheon is typically held in February.

2009 Women In Strength Awards
Each year our organization honors women in the community who have overcome significant obstacles to achieve personal and professional goals. These women serve as role models and provide inspiration to the ladies of the PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County.

The Junior League of Manatee County is pleased to announce the winners of our 2009 Women in Strength Awards to benefit the PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County. Congratulations to Valerie Wojciechowicz, an Inspirational Speaker, Ruth Lyerly, a community volunteer, and Tristan Smith, a former student of the PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County, who will be honored at the Women in Strength Awards Luncheon on Friday, February 27, 2009 at 11:30AM at the Bradenton Country Club.

Valerie Wojciechowicz has overcome many obstacles in her life including addiction, obesity and HIV. She has used her experiences in battling these conditions and related stigmas to become a stronger woman. She used this strength to help others by becoming a Motivational Speaker, Personal Trainer and Aerobics Instructor.

Ruth Lyerly was adopted at the age of two. She became a Registered Nurse and mother to four boys.  She is currently the Chairwoman of MCSAC (Manatee County Substance Abuse Coalition), co-founder of FAADA (Families Against Addictive Drug Abuse) and spokesperson for The Source Theater’s play “The Holding Cell”.

Tristan Smith, the PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County winner, completed the Certified Dental Assistant program at MTI and works at Bayview Dental Associates.

The Junior League of Manatee County had many outstanding nominees this year and is so pleased that Ruth, Valerie, and Tristan will be sharing their life experiences with the Girls of the PACE Center.
